GlobeCast Australia’s 2011 already setting records Down Under

Kim Clijsters Australian Open Women's Champion 2011

GlobeCast Australia has started 2011 with a record level of live global transmissions. The records being set range across sport, entertainment and news events. Global delivery of dramatic Australian floods and cyclone footage occurred to more than 20 key broadcasters; the Christchurch Earthquake coverage also went live globally; and an enormous slate of live sport and entertainment is underway, making it the Broadcast Services provider’s biggest ever start to a year. Apart from Occasional Use, the growth is also due to the committed global carriage of full time channels: Direct to Home (DTH), Free To Air Broadcast and Subscription Television channels. There is increased interest in both HD and 16:9 requirements for full-time channels; and as Australia’s leading DTH operator the Company is impressed by the dedication of global operators to continue discussing expansion of their offerings in this region. Growth in multi-channelling including specialty channels and their spin offs, along with new methods of reaching and entertaining audiences are all pushing demand for bandwidth. Audiences with sophisticated home entertainment systems now expect live coverage in high quality audio and video.

DEADLY QUAKE ROCKS CHRISTCHURCH TO RUINS

Christchurch Earthquake

To ensure worldwide audiences could focus on the New Zealand city of Christchurch after the devastating February earthquake, around the clock live coverage was non-stop for several weeks, via dozens of key broadcasters. GlobeCast Australia turned to its strong relationships with New Zealand networks, its Trans-Tasman connectivity, and its global network of fibre and satellites, to deliver immediate, and ongoing live coverage worldwide. The death toll now exceeds 165, with dozens still missing. Damage to vehicles, buildings and infrastructure was much worse than the previous quake in September last year, including breaks in water, power, phone and gas services. The quake hit at lunchtime local time, with the streets at their busiest - whilst the previous quake occurred in the middle of the night.

It’s Super 15 time ... fifteen teams, three countries of origin, millions of viewers internationally and for the first time in 2011, the Rebels as a 15th team and more action in High Definition with GlobeCast Australia. In 2011, from Friday February 18 when teams including the debutante Rebels run on to fields, GlobeCast Australia will be moving the action live around the Globe. Client networks through until May include BSkyB UK, Sky New Zealand, FOX Sports, Fiji TV, JSports Japan, MNet South Africa, Sky Italia and the Australia Network across Asia to India.

The world's top broadcasters rely on GlobeCast Australia in times of emergency.

As Cyclone Yasi ravaged the North Queensland coast over an unprecedented area - stretching up the coast more than 800 kilometres from the Whitsundays to Cooktown - GlobeCast Australia was carrying live coverage globally. The cyclone destroyed hundreds of homes, destroyed water and sewerage infrastructure in Queensland's second largest city - Townsville - and cut power to almost 200,000 homes across the state. Tens of thousands remain without power and phones, and some services will take weeks to restore. The freak of nature was beamed live via GlobeCast Australia satellites and fibres to local and international news networks including SKY News Australia, TEN Network, Seven Network, ABC News 24 live in HD to FOXTEL and Austar, BSkyB UK, APTN, BBC and ARD Germany. SKY, ABC, Seven and TEN broadcast live in to the night as the cyclone loomed, hit and moved inland, with GlobeCast Australia providing capacity and switching critical interviews and reports live. The cyclone was the most fierce in Queensland in more than 100 years.

Deadly Disaster Demands Global Attention

Volunteers remove flood debris from houses

News Networks at home and abroad relied on GlobeCast Australia's global network to deliver live coverage of the unfolding flood disaster across the East Coast of Australia, and then the devastating Cyclone Yasi. Authorities confirmed more than 20 deaths in Queensland in one week alone as the worst chapter of this Summer Flood Emergency occurred; and flooding spread to New South Wales and Victoria. Broadcasters across Europe, Asia, the US and of course Australia, were booking via GlobeCast Australia’s Optus and AsiaSat satellite leases and on its global fibre. Brisbane and surrounds suffered the worst flooding in almost 40 years, and parts of Victoria were experiencing a “once in 200 years” flood event. The latest disasters follow weeks of devastating flooding across Southern and Central Queensland. Flood Disaster coverage was transmitted live globally by GlobeCast Australia fibre, including from ABC-TV to RTL Germany and from the Nine Network to BSkyB News London. APTN London took fibre feeds from both the ABC and Seven. Other global networks booking with us included CNN, Fox News New York, CCTV China, ARD Germany, Orf Vienna, Channel 2 Israel, TV Asahi Japan, ITN and Reuters. At home, Network TEN was drawing on its GlobeCast Australia provisioned satellite lease and ad hoc bookings; whilst ABC News 24 was being transmitted live in HD to FOXTEL and Austar.
